Chemical Properties and Application
Friction reducer is a cationic polyacrylamide that mainly used as friction reducing agent in acids. It can be dispersed in acids continuously or batch mixed. The unique chemical nature reduces friction pressure significantly in acidizing treatment. The high concentrations of Ca
2+ and Mg
2+ produced in acidizing treatments due to spending of calcite or dolomite will not interfere with this polymer due to its cationic nature.
Friction reducer is compatible with most acid additives including surfactant, corrosion inhibitor, and iron control additives. Typically, the concentration as low as 0.5 to 1.0 Gal/Mgal used in acids can reduce friction pressure by 50-70%. Formation damage caused by friction reducer is generally minimal because of much lower polymer loading and its degradation behavior at elevated temperature.
